The 2018 Roundtable of the Council of the Confucius Institute Headquarters was held in Beijing on July 16-17, 2018. Tian Xuejun, Vice Minister of Education and Executive Council Member of the Confucius Institute Headquarters, attended the roundtable and delivered a keynote speech. The event gathered 26 presidents (council members), honorary council members, senior consultants and special guests from Chinese and overseas universities of eight countries, including the US, New Zealand, Netherlands, Brazil, and Thailand. They conducted in-depth discussion on the opportunities and challenges, reform and development of the Confucius Institute, and exchanged opinions on the new development of the Confucius Institutes in the US.

外代表一致认为，孔子学院发展已经进入一个全面升级的新阶段。孔子学院应进一步面向公众，向中外各界展示其独特价值和积极贡献，鼓励师生、社区民众等受益者分享他们的故事和经历。中外各方应共同努力，加强孔子学院力量建设，培养高质量师资，开发高水平教材，密切结合当地需求，融入大学国际发展战略，为大学和当地人才培养、经济社会发展作出积极贡献。

会议期间，在总部的精心安排下，与会代表在闭馆日参观了故宫的建福宫、《清明上河图3.0》展演馆和文物医院。尽管已是多次参观故宫，代表们仍然对这些寻常难得一见的故宫珍宝和绝技赞叹不已。
